Pioneering director Diane Martel, who created some of the most recognizable music videos of the pop period, such as the contentious “Blurred Lines” clip, has away at the age of 63 from breast cancer.

According to Rolling Stone, she died Thursday at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York, surrounded by her family. She’d been battling breast cancer. She collaborated with stars such as Robin Thicke, Jennifer Lopez, and Justin Timberlake. Blurred Lines topped the US Billboard Hot 100 charts for 12 straight weeks.
Born and reared in New York, where she began documenting the gritty hip-hop environment of the city in the early 1990s, Martel made her debut in the pop world through her collaboration with Mariah Carey.

During that decade, she directed eight of Carey’s videos, starting with Dreamlover and ending with All I Want For Christmas Is You, which has received nearly 900 million views on YouTube.Martel continued to create edgy videos for rap musicians such as Onyx, Method Man, and Redman as she grew popular among young pop artists of the time due to her visually striking and provocative approach.
