According to church officials, Russell M. Nelson, the oldest president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away on Saturday night at the age of 101.
According to a statement from church spokesman Candice Madsen, Nelson passed away at his Salt Lake City home. After being chosen in 1984 to join the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, a high-level church governance body, Nelson, a former heart surgeon, spent forty years in the highest echelons of church leadership.

Following Thomas S. Monson’s death in January 2018, he became the presidency and became the first president of the faith to reach the century mark in 2024.
At the age of 93, Dr. Nelson was elected president and prophet of the church. He brought about a surprising number of new rules and brought about major reforms to a religion that, by 2024, had grown to more than 17.5 million adherents worldwide.

By “dissolving” the First Presidency (the president’s two chosen counselors), the church chooses its next president and prophet. These individuals then re-join the body of apostles, which currently consists of 14.

The most senior apostle is then typically chosen as the next prophet and president based on their length of service in the ministry, not their age. He selects his two advisors by hand, and the Quorum of the Twelve is presided over by the second-most senior apostle.
The official announcement and selection will happen following Nelson’s funeral, the church said.

According to church tradition, Dallin H. Oaks is anticipated to be the next president of the religion, commonly referred to as the Mormon church, albeit the name was not announced right away.
He is the member of the church’s ruling Quorum of the Twelve Apostles with the next longest tenure. Nelson and one of his best counselors explained that they aim to strike a balance between the “love of the Lord and the law of the Lord” while dealing with LGBTQ+ people.
According to the Utah-based religion, presidents are prophets who guide the church by divine revelations while working with two of the Quorum of the Twelve’s leading counselors.
