After a Florida jury found Ryan Wesley Routh guilty of trying to kill Donald Trump on a golf course last year, Routh attempted to stab himself in the neck with a pen on Tuesday, bringing his trial to a dramatic conclusion.
Sara, Routh’s daughter, cried out, “Dad, don’t hurt yourself,” as the bailiffs hurried Routh out of the courthouse while struggling to hold him.

Routh was brought back to the courtroom shortly afterward to finish the proceedings. He was handcuffed this time, but his white shirt showed no signs of blood, and he didn’t seem to have been able to hurt himself.
Routh, 59, was charged with five federal criminal counts, including assaulting a federal officer, various firearms violations, and attempting to assassinate a prominent presidential contender. The maximum penalty for the charges is life in prison. After hours of deliberation, the jury returned to the court with a verdict.
The announcement follows a trial that lasted about three weeks. The majority of prosecutors’ closing statements on Tuesday focused on the forensic and digital evidence that was shown during the trial, as well as what they said was Routh’s obvious intent: to murder Trump.

Adam, Routh’s son, exclaimed, “We love you, Dad,” as he was once more led from the courthouse. As he was being led away, Routh seemed to wink at his children.
After only two and a half hours of deliberation, the jury found Routh guilty of three federal gun crimes related to the Sept. 15, 2024, incident, as well as assaulting the Secret Service agent who woke him from his hiding location. Routh, who entered a not guilty plea to all of the counts, will be sentenced on December 18 and might spend the rest of his life behind bars.
